Course description:

In this course, the learner will learn what money laundering is, how it works through placement, layering and integration, and why it creates serious risks for the financial system and wider society. The learner will also understand the responsibilities of financial advisors in identifying red flags, applying customer due diligence, checking source of funds and source of wealth, understanding beneficial ownership, and reporting suspicious activity when required. In addition, the learner will have gained insight into current global anti-money laundering developments, including stricter rules for crypto-assets, stronger transparency measures, growing scrutiny of trusts, companies and property transactions, and the importance of a risk-based approach. Overall, the learner will be better equipped to recognise potential money laundering risks and to apply practical, ethical and compliant AML principles in a South African financial advisory context.

The following topics will be covered in this course:

  • Understanding Money Laundering – How illicit funds are moved through financial systems.
  • Latest Money Laundering Tactics – Emerging threats, including cyber-enabled laundering and trade-based money laundering.
  • Global Regulatory Trends – Key updates from FATF, FinCEN, FSCA, and other regulatory bodies.
  • The Role of Technology in AML – How AI, machine learning, and blockchain impact AML compliance.
  • Customer Due Diligence (CDD) & KYC Best Practices – Strengthening verification processes and identifying high-risk clients.
  • Suspicious Transaction Monitoring – Enhancing detection techniques and red flag indicators.
  • Cryptocurrency and Money Laundering Risks – Understanding the challenges posed by decentralised finance (DeFi).
  • Penalties for Non-Compliance – Case studies on enforcement actions and lessons learned.
  • Strengthening AML Programs – Implementing best practices for policy development and staff training.

By the end of this course, the learner will be equipped with the knowledge to identify emerging money laundering threats, navigate evolving regulatory expectations, and enhance their organisation’s AML compliance efforts.
